Decision on Tehelka witnesses on Dec 11: Venkataswami Commission

Justice K Venkataswami, probing allegations of corruption in defence deals, on Wednesday deferred his orders till December 11 on the appearance of Defence Minister George Fernandes before the Commission.

The matter of appearance of various witnesses, including Fernandes, will be decided only after the Commission receives the list of witnesses and documents pertaining to the making and publication of the allegations of corruption in defence deals from all parties, including news portal Tehelka.com and the Centre, he said.

Fernandes had pleaded that he should be the first to appear before the Commission.

While indicating that about five to six witnesses will be produced by each of them, various counsels said the list will be submitted by December 10, the deadline given by the Commission to do so.

Meanwhile, Additional Solicitor General Kirit N Raval, who will represent the government, reiterated that the witnesses for various aspects of making and publication of allegations should be treated separately.

This argument was contested by Tehelka.com's counsel Prashant Bhushan who said the process could lead to repetition of the witnesses, which was logistically not feasible.
