Govt willing to consider amendments to POTO: PM

Bowing to pressure from Opposition and some National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee told the Lok Sabha on Monday that the government is willing to consider amendments to the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance and announced he would convene a meeting of Opposition leaders on Tuesday to discuss the issue.

Responding to an hour-long impromptu debate during Zero Hour on certain reported remarks made by him on Sunday at Hyderabad, Vajpayee conceded that it would have been better if the government had consulted opposition leaders before promulgating the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance (POTO).

He said the Telugu Desam Party, while supporting the measure during the recent chief ministers' conference, had expressed reservations on certain provisions.

Asking the opposition not to play politics on an issue which threatened the country's unity, Vajpayee said the Congress should tell the government about its objections to the ordinance.
