Fire breaks out at main CNG station in Delhi

Basharat Peer in New Delhi

A fire broke out at the Indraprastha Compressed Natural Gas filling station at Sarai Kale Khan in south Delhi on Tuesday afternoon, adding fuel to the debate on the viability of CNG as an alternative fuel.

"Around 5.50 pm a generator connected to the gas filling motor - the motor which is used to build pressure to transport the gas from the storage tank to the vehicles - in the filling station caught fire," Shahnawaz Khan, a motor mechanic told rediff.com.

"The generator had been used for a long time without any break resulting in it heating up and catching fire. The moment I saw the fire breaking out, I called the fire service," Khan added.

The owners of the filling station were not available for comment.

Several employees of the filling station said the timely arrival of the fire service prevented a major tragedy from occurring.

The fire control room said the fire has been put out.

"Our men rushed to the spot the moment we got the message and they have called us back saying that the fire has been controlled. But the fire extinguishing teams have not yet returned from the spot," an official at the fire control room told rediff.com.

Hardly, a fortnight back a bus running on CNG had caught fire in central Delhi resulting in injuries to many passengers.
