Goons attack Bombay church during I-Day service

Shiv Kumar in Bombay

Close on the heels of an attack on a Catholic priest by Bajrang Dal goons last week, a church in Bombay was attacked on Independence Day.

According to police, 15 persons attacked the prayer hall of the New Light Fellowship Church at Dharavi in central Bombay when a special Independence Day service was in progress.

The mob attacked Pastor Koyal Pichay and his deputy, Yeshudas Selvaraj.

The assembled gathering of about 50 people, however, chased away the attackers.

In the melee, Pichay and his deputy were injured. They were treated at the Sion municipal hospital and discharged.

According to the police, an old dispute between members of the church and local residents could be the reason for the attack.

It is not known if any political party or organisation was behind the attack. The church has lodged a police complaint.

Wednesday's attack came even as leaders of the Christian community met Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal to protest against last week's attack at a Thane church. Bhujbal assured the community members of action against the attackers.
