The Union Minister for Law and Justice, Arun Jaitley, on Tuesday denied that the Centre had given a three-day ultimatum to Tamil Nadu to send three top Indian Police Service officers to Delhi or face action.
"Yes, I saw a news item on this subject in a private television network. Let me tell you that the government has not issued any such directive to the Tamil Nadu government," Jaitley told rediff.com.
He, however, clarified that the state government would have to abide by the directive given by the Centre earlier, wherein it had asked the state government to release the three police officers who had allegedly attacked former chief minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi.
The three police officer transferred to Delhi are K Muthukaruppan, Madras Police Commissioner, S George, Joint Commissioner of Police, and Christopher Nelson, Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Though these officers were transferred to Delhi by an order of the home ministry, the state chief minister, Jayalalithaa, refused to oblige the Centre and has not released them.
The three had moved the Madras bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal against the Centre's order and had asked for a stay in the matter.
But the CAT had refused to grant a stay.
