Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Monday spoke to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham president M Karunanidhi over telephone to enquire about the violence during the DMK rally in Madras on Sunday night.
Talking to reporters after meeting Tamil Nadu Governor C Rangarajan at the Raj Bhavan in Madras, Karunanidhi said he apprised the prime minister on the situation in the state and requested him to appoint an inquiry commission, headed by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court, to probe the alleged violation of constitutional norms in the state.
Asked whether the prime minister was 'receptive' to his demand, he said, "Yes. I believe an inquiry commission will be constituted soon."
He charged the AIADMK with instigating violence during the rally, which was 'very peaceful' till the fag end.
DMK MPs, who forced Parliament to be adjourned over the issue, also met the prime minister in the Capital and apprised him of the details of the alleged police excesses on party workers.
The MPs also met Rajya Sabha Chairman Krishan Kant.
Karunanidhi said most of the injured had deep cuts and stab injuries, which was the handiwork of AIADMK's 'rowdy elements'.
"DMK men will not attack other DMK men with knives and sickles. The cut injuries suffered by most of them clearly showed that it is the handiwork of AIADMK men," he said.
Karunanidhi demanded the immediate release of DMK men arrested in connection with the violence, and the vehicles impounded by the police.
He contested the remarks of Madras Police Commissioner K Muthukarruppan on Sunday night that DMK men had attacked the Director General of Police's office, mistaking it for the commissioner's office.
The former Tamil Nadu chief minister also expressed concern over the attacks on mediapersons during the violence.
Karunanidhi, along with party general secretary K Anbazhagan, met the governor and presented a memorandum on Sunday night's incidents.
He said the governor had assured him that action would be taken against those responsible for the violence.
