Police looking for two more men in Phoolan murder

The Delhi police is looking for two more men who are involved in the murder of Phoolan Devi. Seven persons are already in custody over the Samajwadi Party MP's sensational killing.

"We have fanned our men over various parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal to look for Vicky and Shravan who are involved in the crime," Additional Commissioner of Police Qamar Ahmed told Indo-Asian News Service.

Four men gunned down Phoolan Devi outside her Ashoka Road government bungalow in the heart of Delhi on July 25, as she was returning home from Parliament House.

The prime accused, Sher Singh Rana alias Pankaj, gave himself up to the Uttaranchal police two days later.

Three days after Rana's arrest, on July 30, his three associates were also arrested. They were identified as Ravinder, Rajbir and Shekhar Singh.

Ahmed said Vicky alias Dhanraj is suspected to have fired at the MP's bodyguard, Balwinder Singh.

He said investigations have also shown that an imposter using Rana's name was lodged in the Hardwar jail since June and was released a day after Phoolan Devi was shot.

"We found out that Rana had asked his servant Shravan to go to jail and use his name to confuse the investigators," Ahmed said.

The police on Friday arrested three more men -- Keshav Chauhan, a member of the Samajwadi Party, lawyer Praveen Mittal and gun dealer Amit Rathi -- in connection with the murder.

But despite the arrests the police is nowhere close to establishing the motive behind the murder.

"Investigations are on and we are piecing together the sequence of events," Ahmed said.

It has also been found that Rana had made an abortive attempt to kill Phoolan Devi last year.

He used to live in the south Delhi neighborhood of Chittaranjan Park where the MP owned a house. But when his attempt failed, he befriended a woman political activist, Uma Kashyap, to reach Phoolan Devi.

On the day of the murder, he arrived at the MP's house with Kashyap and her husband. In the morning, he drove Phoolan Devi to Parliament. Hours later he shot her dead while she was returning home for lunch.
