Accused in Gulshan
murder case refused bail

A sessions court Monday rejected the bail plea of Faiyaz Chougale, facing the charge of conspiracy to kill audio king Gulshan Kumar in Bombay in 1997.

Faiyaz had urged, through his lawyer Majeed Memon, his release from prison as he was suffering from suspected liver cancer. The accused pleaded for urgent treatment so that he remained alive to face trial.

Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam opposed his bail and urged the court to get the accused examined by a panel of doctors.

Additional sessions judge M L Tahilyani, conducting the Gulshan Kumar murder trial, ordered the medical board of Sir J J Hospital to examine the accused thoroughly and submit a report on his condition.

The court perused the report that said that Faiyaz was put to extensive tests and doctors had come to conclusion that he did not suffer from liver cancer.

In view of the medical report, the court turned down his bail petition on medical ground.

Chougale is charged with participating in the conspiracy to kill the audio king in August 1997.

The police alleged that prior to murder of Gulshan Kumar, other accused used to regularly assemble at the STD booth (Faiyaz Communication Centre) owned by Chougale in Santa Cruz from where calls were made to the prime conspirators in Dubai.
