Most DMK leaders to contest same seats

N Sathiya Moorthy in Madras

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi will contest again from Chepauk constituency in Madras city, which he had won in the 1996 elections to the state assembly.

Party General Secretary and Education Minister K Anbazhagan has been named for the Harbour seat, while city Mayor and DMK Youth wing leader, M K Stalin, is seeking re-election from Thousand Lights.

Karunanidhi released the list of DMK nominees at a rain-soaked rally at Saidapet, where the party has re-nominated Saidai Kittu. Most other city constituencies have sitting ministers or legislators contesting on DMK tickets.

It includes Deputy Speaker Parithi Ilamvazhuthi in Egmore, and film star-politician T Rajendhar in Park Town.

Napolean, another film star, is entering the electoral fray from Villivakkam constituency, which also has the largest electorate in the state. Film-star Chandrashekhar, who lost the 1999 Lok Sabha polls on the DMK ticket, has been nominated for the Thiruchengode seat.

Speaker P T R Palanivel Rajan will contest his Madurai West seat, while Food Minister K N Nehru has been renominated from Lalgudi. From among the leaders who had crossed over from the AIADMK, K K S S R Ramachandran will be the DMK candidate for Sattur, while S Karuppuswami Pandian will contest the Tenkasi seat, and S Raghupathiy, the Thirumayam seat.

As hinted at by Karunanidhi earlier, the DMK list of 167 nominees has 74 new faces, while 93 incumbent legislators have been retained. There are 14 women candidates, 81 degree holders, 26 lawyers, and five doctors.
