Security alert as seven killed in Manipur

At least seven Kuki villagers were killed and an equal number injured by armed militants in Manipur's Senapati district on Thursday night, official sources said in Imphal on Saturday.

They said armed militants belonging to the Kuki Revolutionary Army and a Naga underground faction stormed into a Kuki-majority Keithelmanbi village in Senapati district and kidnapped 14 villagers on Thursday night.

While six of them were shot dead at nearby Khaibung village, eight sustained serious bullet wounds, the sources said.

Of the eight injured, one succumbed to injuries on way to hospital, they said.

Police and security forces have intensified patrolling to prevent any untoward incident and movement of armed militants in their areas, the sources added.

The sources said Thursday's incident was a follow-up of a factional fight between the underground groups Kuki Revolutionary Army and NSCN (I-M) on one side and Kuki National Army on the other.

The identities of the seven killed in the incident were not known, the sources said, adding that investigations were on to find out whether the deceased were supporters of the KRA or NSCN(I-M).

Senior police officials said police and security forces deployed at Keithelmanbi were instructed to keep a round-the-clock vigil.

The bodies of those killed were taken to the regional Institute of Medical Science hospital for post-mortems, the sources said, adding that the injured were also moved to a nearby hosptial.
