Govt announces 4-day ceasefire in Lanka

P Mohan Das in Colombo

The Sri Lankan Government Wednesday declared a four-day truce to mark the occasion of the Sinhala-Tamil New Year during which all military operations will be suspended against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

Government spokesman Ariya Rubasinghe said in a statement that the ceasefire will come into force beginning midnight of April 12 till 0600 hours on April 17.

Accordingly, the defence ministry has issued instructions to the commanders of the armed forces to halt offensive operations against the Liberation Tamil Tigers in the military zones.

As a goodwill gesture, the government has also announced the release of 10 LTTE cadres.

The LTTE had announced a ceasefire last Christmas, and it will be in force till April 24. The LTTE had also announced the release of four security personnel as a goodwill gesture.
