Sonia deputes Ambika Soni
to mollify Karunakaran

The Congress high command Sunday night deputed Ambika Soni, a confidante of party president Sonia Gandhi, to pacify sulking Congress Working Committee member K Karunakaran, who quit the top policy-making forum on Saturday, protesting denial of assembly poll tickets to his supporters, including daughter Padmaja, following an apparent hardening of posture by him.

Predictably, the high command has rejected the resignation of Karunakaran from CWC to which he is a permanent invitee claiming the action of the party veteran was taken in a huff.

An indication of the tough posture by Karunakaran faction in the group-ridden Congress in Kerala was available when the veteran leader's son and KPCC Vice President K Muraleedharan said it would not seek the high command's intervention to resolve crisis in the state unit following his father's resignation.

"We are not going to beg the central leadership's intervention to solve the problems. So far, no central leader has contacted us," Muraleedharan, M P, told PTI.

Sensing the trouble ahead, Soni, AICC general secretary, is being rushed on a mission mollification. She is likely to leave for Trivandrum on Monday for talks with Karunakaran.
