Karunanidhi surprised over escape: PTI

''I do not know what compelled him. Probably due to his mental condition, he may have escaped,'' Karunanidhi told reporters in Madras.

He said that Nagappa should answer the qustion of why he tried to escape, He said, ''I am not Nagappa to answer this question. However, Nagappa himself had stated that Veerappan was treating the hostages well.''

On whether the Special Task Force of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka police would enter the jungle to rescue Rajakumar and two others in the light of Nagappa giving clues about the route to reach the place where Veerappan was hiding, Karunanidhi asked what was the guarantee that Veerappan and his gang would continure to remain at the same place.

He said the next course of action would be decided only after Gopal returned from the jungles after meeting Veerappan.

Parvathamma discharged
Parvathamma, wife of Rajakumar, was discharged on Friday from a private hospital where she was admitted following chest pain.

Parvathamma's personal physician Dr Ramana Rao told PTI, "She is much better now but is tired and requires a lot of rest to recuperate." All her vital parameters were normal, he said.

Parvathamma, admitted to hospital on September 20, had also developed severe pain in the left leg, which had reduced now, doctors said.

She is apparently under tremendous stress after her husband was abducted by Veerappan from their Gajanur farm house in Tamil Nadu's Erode district on July 30.
