Surat mystery blaze toll rises to 20

With the death of two more persons on Friday, the death toll in last Sunday's devastating fire in a newly built housing complex in Surat has reached 20.

Hospital sources said that Sitaben Banghubhai Kharsadya (60) and Hemanginiben Ranjitsinh Parmar (40) had suffered over 75 per cent burns and succumbed to injuries on Friday. Four others are battling for their lives in a city hospital.

The cause of the fire is said to be the flame that rose from a pot during a religious ceremony for a house-warming. However, police sources said that they are investigating different versions by the survivors.
