Allahabad high court vacates stay on Sakshi Maharaj's arrest

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Allahabad high court vacated on Thursday the stay on the arrest of Samajwadi Party MP Satchidananda Sakshi Maharaj, who is accused of raping his disciple.

Rejecting the stay on his arrest, a division bench of the court said arrest was necessary during investigation under the Criminal Procedure Code and other judicial pronouncements.

The bench, comprising Justice J C Gupta and Justice M A Khan, also dismissed Sakshi Maharaj's plea to quash the first information report filed against him.

The FIR was lodged by a disciple, Durga Bharti, and two others at the Kotwali police station in Etah district of Uttar Pradesh.

The judges said the allegation that Bharti was a "puppet in the hands of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party" was "unreasonable".
