Sardinha to face confidence vote on Tuesday

Sandesh Prabhudesai in Panjim

Goa Chief minister Francisco Sardinha is to prove his majority on the floor of the House on Tuesday.

Governor Mohammed Fazal issued a notification to this effect late on Sunday evening. He has convened a special session on October 24 with an one-point agenda - the motion on the vote of confidence to be moved by the chief minister.

The uncertainty arose once again as the Bharatiya Janata Party withdrew its support to the Sardinha-led coalition government on Sunday morning, while staking claim to form an alternate government.

After eight members of the two splinter groups of the Congress joining the 10-member BJP on Saturday, its leader Manohar Parrikar has claimed the support of 21 members in the 40-member House.

Though all 21 legislators met the governor on Sunday afternoon, the session is being convened in view of Sardinha refusing to step down but offering to prove his majority on the floor of the House.

Before issuing the notification, the governor met Sardinha, Speaker Pratapsinh Rane as well as Nationalist Congress Party leader Dr Wilfred DeSouza.
