Manipur militants attack police station, snatch arms

Armed militants on Friday attacked a police station in Manipur and snatched all weapons, including highly sophisticated ones, after overpowering the policemen, official sources said in Imphal.

At least 40 suspected activists of the banned United National Liberation Front fired in the air and stormed the Jiribam police station, about 220 kilometres west of Imphal.

The militants disarmed the policemen, who were taken by surprise, and took away twelve self loading rifles, fourteen .303 rifles, one sten gun, three revolvers, four 9mm pistols and two powerful grenade-firing rifles, the sources said.

Before escaping, the militants knocked out three powerful wireless sets disrupting communication between Jiribam and the police headquarters in Imphal for several hours.

The looting of arms has caused serious concern among top police officials in the state because militants of different groups had taken away 300 weapons from security personnel, most of them sophisticated ones, in the past one year, sources said.
