'By the fifth day, Mr Vajpayee will be able to take short walks'

NetScribes/Sunil Joshi

There is one emphatic message that Indian politics and the nation at large have to take note of: The PM is well. And he should be walking in the next five days. After a 65-minute operation, Dr Chittaranjan Ranawat, who headed the team of doctors that operated the PM's knee on Tuesday morning, came out of the operation theatre and uttered the awaited-with-bated-breath words: "The deed is done.''

Dr Nandu Laud, head of the department at the LTMG Hospital, who also supervised the entire operation along with Dr Ranawat, told NetScribes outside the operating theatre,"The PM has a completely functioning new knee. Tomorrow, he will be exercising on the CPM (continuous passive mobilisation) device, which would help regulate knee/joint movements. By the fifth day, Mr Vajpayee will be able to take short walks."

According to the team, the replaced knee will see PM walk confidently at least for the next 15 years. "He will also be ready to undertake tours/visits within the next four weeks," Dr Laud said.

During the operation, Vajpayee was placed on a spinal anaesthesia (pre-operative) and epidural anaesthesia (post-operative), the effect of which is expected to last for the next two days. Nerve blocking anaesthesia has also been administered.
