Vajpayee undergoes pre-surgery tests

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Monday underwent pre-operative evolutions involving all tests required before the knee surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.

Vajpayee is scheduled to fly to Bombay on October 8 for the surgery at Breach Candy hospital, Ashok Tandon, media advisor to the prime minister, told UNI.

He is expected to be operated upon on October 10 and will remain in hospital for four to five days after the surgery. He is expected to return to Delhi on October 18 and resume official work from his residence that day.

The prime minister has been experiencing intense pain in his knee joints for few months and had to return abruptly to Delhi from the BJP's Nagpur session on August 27 without addressing it.

Later, he was examined by a team of doctors at the AIIMS, headed by the institute chief, who recommended surgery. He also sought second opinion from Dr C Ranawat during his United States visit, who agreed to perform the surgery in India as per the convenience of the prime minister.
