Four Biharis shot dead in Assam

Four people, all Biharis, were shot dead Sunday by suspected United Liberation Front of Assam militants in Assam's Nalbari district, police said.

A group of cycle-borne militants came to village Jagra at around 0200 hrs and asked the victims to come out of their houses.

As they opened the door, the militants fired killing three of them on the spot while another was injured. The other inmates of the house escaped through the backdoor.

The injured man later succumbed to his wounds. The militants fled under the cover of darkness, the sources said.

The victims were Bihari quiltmakers who were living in the area for quite some time.

They have been identified as Sofir Alam, Umir Alam, S Mazi and A Alam.

Senior police and civil officials have rushed to the village and a massive search operation has been launched to nab the culprits, the sources said.

Security in the entire district, which is considered a hotbed for ULFA activities, has been further tightened as there are reports that the banned outfit will unleash violence on the eve of its establishment day on Monday.
