AIR asked to lift ban on harmonium

The Baroda-based Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad Trust Thursday demanded lifting of ban on use of harmonium by the All India Radio (AIR), imposed in 1915.

Its trustee Dr B D Sharma told PTI that the trust would organise a two-day seminar and presentation exclusively on the 'Harmonium' ( samvadini) to mark the centenary year of the instrument to be held on November 25 and 26 at Kirti Mandir in Baroda.

The harmonium, introduced in India hundred years ago, has become integral part of Indian classical music, he said.

Alexander of France had invented this instrument in 1840 and since then it has been a very popular instrument in France, Germany and other parts of the world, he added.
