CBI may move SC to cancel Bibi's bail

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Central Bureau of Investigation might move the apex court to get the anticipatory bail granted to Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee president Bibi Jagir Kaur in the Harpreet Kaur murder case cancelled.

While granting the bail on Wednesday, the Punjab and Haryana high court had directed Jagir Kaur to appear before the CBI at 1100 hours (IST) on Friday and join the investigation into the case.

Talking to newspersons, the official spokesman of the agency said that the legal cell is examining the possibility of moving the Supreme Court against the high court order and a decision in this respect may be taken in the next one week.

"The investigators feel that her custodial interrogation is essential," he said.

Earlier, Jagir Kaur drove to the CBI headquarters in Lodhi Road accompanied by a battery of lawyers well before the deadline of 1100 hours.

Bibi told waiting newspersons she wanted to present her side of the story to the CBI. She parried all questions regarding contesting the forthcoming SGPC polls or about Kamaljit Singh, the man claiming to have married her daughter.

After waiting at the reception for about ten minutes, Bibi was told to appear before Deputy Inspector General Archana Ramasundaram and Superintendent of Police Anurag Garg at the CBI's Dalhousie Road office.

Bibi emerged from the DIG's office at 1420 hours appearing calm and unperturbed. Her advocates - Maninder Singh, Navdeep Singh, Gurukripal Singh, Vipin Gogia and Anupam Sharma - had apparently advised her against speaking to mediapersons.

"She is going back to Punjab and would come back for another round of interrogation as and when the CBI calls her. We have presented our side of the story and answered a wide range of questions," said one of the advocates who accompanied Bibi from Chandigarh.

Later briefing newspersons, CBI spokesman S M Khan said Kaur might be called for another round of interrogation sometime next week. He did not disclose details of what transpired during the interrogation.

When asked if the CBI was planning to move the apex court to get her bail cancelled, Khan said that the legal department was already seized of the matter and the court would be moved if there were sufficient grounds to do so.

He denied the CBI had deliberately delayed arresting Bibi. "The question of when to arrest an accused in a particular case is decided by the investigating officer," Khan said.
