New state of Jharkhand is born

Jharkhand, the 28th state of the Indian Union was born at midnight Tuesday with the swearing in of Governor Prabhat Kumar at a glittering ceremony on the lawns of the Raj Bhavan.

Kumar was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Justice Vinod Kumar Gupta, the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court, at five minutes past midnight.

Jharkhand, known for its rich mineral and natural wealth, is generally referred to as the better side of undivided Bihar. The North and Central parts of Bihar are battered by natural calamities.

The region, however, has witnessed growing extremist activities recently.

Babulal Marandi, who was elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party on Tuesday, is to form the first government in Jharkhand.
