Murasoli Maran still critical

Shobha Warrier in Madras

Union Industries Minister Murasoli Maran, who was admitted to Apollo Hospital, Madras, after he complained of severe migraine and had difficulty breathing on October 28, is in a very critical condition even though there was slight improvement in his condition early on Wednesday.

Maran's condition deteriorated badly on Tuesday night and on hearing the news, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who is also related to Maran, rushed to the hospital and was by his bedside till 4 am. All his cabinet colleagues and other DMK functionaries were also in the hospital, as was the entire press. Only after the Chief Minister left for his residence in the wee hours of Wednesday did the ministers, party functionaries and the press retreat.

The condition of the 66 year old minister, who has been in Intensive Care Unit ever since he was admitted in hospital on October 28, still continues to be critical, and he is said to be suffering from periodic spells of acute breathlessness.

The statement from Apollo Hospital said Maran was suffering from 'severe diastolic ventricular dysfunction as a consequence of hyper-tropic obstructive cardio myopathy (a condition where the heart muscles harden) which was managed initially by optimum medication'. But when he developed recurrent pulmonary oedema, he was put on a temporary pace-maker from November 6 after which his condition improved slightly.

A cardiac surgeon from the US is expected any time in Madras, say sources, but this could not be confirmed.
