Shia leader killed in Kashmir blast

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Prominent Shia leader Agha Syed Mehdi was killed along with four others, including two security men, when the jeep in which he was travelling hit a landmine at Mazhamma village, Badgam district in Kashmir on Friday.

Mehdi, who contested last year's general election against Omar Abdullah, was killed in the blast and his bullet-proof Maruti Gypsy was completely gutted. Apart from all those in the vehicle, one bystander was also killed in the explosion.

Senior police and security officials have rushed to the spot. A police officer said the area was being searched, and that no one has yet admitted responsibility for the blast.
