Cong, TDP pocket one seat each in by-polls

The Congress and the Telugu Desam Party have retained one seat each in the two assembly by-polls in the state.

Congress candidate Patlolla Sabitha Reddy won with a margin of 29,909 votes in the Chevella constituency in Rangareddy district, while Telugu Desam Party's Alimineti Uma Devi Reddy emerged victorious in Bhongir in Nalgonda district.

The by-poll outcome was on expected lines. The main contenders in Bhongir and Chevella were widows of two former ministers. Sabitha Reddy is the widow of late P Indra Reddy and Uma Devi Reddy is the widow of late Madhava Reddy.

Sabitha Reddy polled 84,448 votes, while her nearest rival and Telugu Desam Party candidate Kitchannagari Lakshma Reddy polled 54,539 votes.

Five independents in the fray together polled 4,925 votes and forfeited their deposits.

The Chevella seat in Rangareddy district fell vacant following the death of the sitting MLA and former minister P Indra Reddy in a road accident near Shamshabad on the intervening night of April 21/22.

The by-poll in Bhongir followed the death of sitting legislator and Panchayat Raj Minister A Madhava Reddy in a landmine blast triggered by the outlawed People's War Group near Ghatkesar on March 7.
