P Mohan Das in Colombo

Separatist Tamil guerrillas attacked government forces early today and troops repulsed them, inflicting 'heavy casualties' on the rebels.

A Jaffna situation report released by the government information department said that terrorists in large numbers launched two consecutive attacks today on the troops manning defences north of Pallai.

Troops fought back the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam militants who were compelled to withdraw southwards.

The first assault lasted approximately 30 minutes and the second was repulsed within 15 minutes, the report said.

Meanwhile, troops continue to dominate areas ahead of the forward defended localities, it added.

Yesterday, troops sniped and killed one terrorist south of Nagarkovil while two soldiers were injured in rebel mortar fire.
