Pak to scale down J&K militancy

E-Mail this report to a friend

Special Correspondent

US President Bill Clinton's tough words seem to have had the desired effect if the statement of Pakistan Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf is any indication.

General Musharraf is quoted by The Financial Times as saying that Pakistan is ready to ''persuade Kashmiri freedom groups to scale down their activities'' in Jammu and Kashmir ''to pave way for talks, provided India also takes action to enforce human rights in the disputed state''.

"There has to be reciprocity in all actions," Gen Musharraf said in an interview with The Financial Times .

"They want something from our side. We will try to address this issue, try to persuade the freedom fighters to reduce tension. But there has to be reciprocity. They should never expect us to take unilateral action."
