General Kumaramangalam dead

General Paramasiva Prabhakar Kumaramangalam, former chief of army staff died at the Air Force Command Hospital in Bangalore, early today. He was 87.

Gen Kumaramangalam was the army chief from June 1966 to June 7, 1969.

The funeral with full military honours will take place at Meg centre crematorium in Bangalore at 12 pm tomorrow, said an official press note.

Born on July 1, 1913, Gen Kumaramangalam was commissioned into the regiment of artillery in 1933. He was the second Indian officer to be commissioned into the regiment of artillery of the Indian army. The general had his early education at Eton and graduated from Woolwich.

Before taking over as the chief of the army staff in 1966, Gen Kumaramangalam held several prestigious posts including that of vice-chief of the army staff, GoC-in-C, eastern command, depury chief of army staff, adjutant general and commandant, DSSC, Wellington.

During World War II, then a major, he took part in operations in the Middle East and quickly earned a Distinguished Service Order award for action in Libya on May 27, 1942.
