Druglord Iqbal Mirchi's properties to be attached

Additional Sessions Judge A J Dholakia today directed the Mumbai police to attach properties belonging to narcotic king Iqbal Memon alias Iqbal Mirchi. According to a conservative estimate the current value of the real estate owned by the drug lord in Mumbai alone runs into millions of rupees.

The direction came after the judge rejected a revision application moved by Mirchi challenging the chief metropolitan magistrate's order to attach his properties.

CMM T V Nalavade had directed Mumbai police to attach two residential buildings, one hotel and two flats (all in Mumbai) owned by Mirchi after he was declared a proclaimed offender in a narcotic case.

Advocate Rajendra Shirodkar, who appeared on Mirchi's behalf, told the court that his client was innocent and was in fact abroad when 4606 kg of mandrax tablets were seized from an abandoned jeep at Worli in 1993.

The court, however, rejected his contention and asked the police to proceed with the attachment of the properties.
