Police registers case, arrests bus driver

E-Mail this report to a friend

Kamla Bora in Jaipur

The police has registered a case and started investigating the cause of the head-on collision between a Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation bus and the Maruti Gypsy on the Jaipur-Agra national highway near Dausa yesterday, in which senior Congress leader Rajesh Pilot was killed.

The case has been registered by the Dausa district police, who have also taken the driver of the bus, Ram Narayan Meena, into custody.

The chairman of RSRTC, V N Bahadur said the roadways will not conduct a separate, departmental inquiry into the mishap.

He also confirmed that the police had arrested the bus driver for interrogation and further investigation.

However, he said there seems to be no fault on the driver's part, and that he had wheeled the vehicle to the extreme left of the road. The bus was stated to be almost stationery when Pilot's jeep hit it head-on.

Eye- witnesses have been quoted as saying that Pilot was driving at a very high speed - possibly at more than 100 km per hour -- when the accident occurred.

Police sources in Dausa said the eye-witnesses would be interrogated. The three other occupants of the jeep, including Congress legislator Mahendra Meena, who are being treated for their injuries in the Sawai Man Singh Hospital, would also be interrogated to find out the cause of the accident.

The police refused to set any deadline for completing the investigation but said the arrested bus driver would be produced before a magistrate by this evening.
