Centre welcomes Hizbul's ceasefire decision

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Centre today welcomed the Hizbul Mujahideen's decision to declare a unilateral ceasefire saying any step, which would lead to peace in Jammu and Kashmir was a good development.

"We are in touch with the state government and closely monitoring the situation," home secretary Kamal Pande said.

Responding to a query about the ceasefire offer, Pande said, "We have noted the statement made by the Hizbul Mujahideen. Any step that moves towards peace is welcome."

In reply to a question, he said the Hizbul Mujahideen faction was led by Majid Dar "but other leaders were also present at the press conference (in Srinagar)."

"They want discussions with the Centre and they haven't put any condition. This is also a welcome development," Pande, who returned from a two-day visit from the state Sunday, said.
