Leh continues to remain under curfew

E-Mail this report to a friend

Leh and its adjoining areas remained under curfew for the second day on Friday. The curfew was imposed after three Buddhist monks were gunned down by militants on Tuesday. Police and paramilitary forces patrolled the deserted streets.

Tension gripped the area since last Monday after reports of alleged derogatory remarks made by Ladakh Buddhist Association vice president Sonam Gombo against a religious scripture. The situation was further aggravated following the killing of the three monks by militants.

The authorities clamped indefinite curfew on Thursday to prevent the situation from taking an ugly turn. The situation in Leh town was officially described as 'tense but under control'.

Twelve people, including Gombo, had been taken into custody as a precautionary measure.
