Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Indefinite curfew has been imposed in the entire Leh district since last evening following the killing of three Buddhist Lamas by unidentified militants in Rongdom near Kargil. The gunmen fled after shooting down the Lamas.

The entire district, which had been tense over the last few days following some allegedly derogatory remarks made by the vice-president of the Ladakh Buddhist Association, Sonam Gombo, took a turn for the worse once news of the killings spread across the town.

As news of the killings reached Kargil, district police chief Javed Geelani and other officers rushed to the spot.

The SSP, Leh, told rediff.com, "Curfew was imposed to defuse tension. At present the situation is tense but under control."

The state finance minister, A R Rather, and divisional commissioner Khursheed Ganjea have also rushed to the spot.

Talking to rediff.com, the minister of state for public works, Qamas Ali Akhoon, who hails from Kargil, said, "The authorities have ensured that no untoward incident will occur."
