10 legislators quit Congress in Manipur

Ten Congress legislators Thursday deserted their party, reducing its strength in the 60-member Manipur Assembly to one.

The legislators, who formed the Manipur Regional Congress Party under the leadership of state legislature party leader Radhabinod Koijam, informed Speaker S Dhananjoy Singh about the split and requested him to recognise them as a separate group.

The seven Opposition parties - the Bharatiya Janata Party, MRCP, Progressive Federal Party of Manipur, Samata Party, Janata Dal-S, Nationalist Congress Party and Manipur Peoples' Party -- had earlier formed the Manipur Democratic Front.

Dr Nimaichand Luwang of the MRCP and Haokholet Kipgen of the Progressive Federal Party of Manipur will be convenor and co-convenor of the front.

The front has a strength of 23 members in the House, while the ruling United Front enjoys a majority with 35 members.

Radhabinod left Imphal for New Delhi Thursday afternoon along with O Joy of the MPP and W Basanta Kumar of the Samata Party to meet central ministers and other leaders.

On the eve of his departure, Radhabinod said that as the north-eastern state's interests were bigger than the party's, he, along with nine colleagues, quit the party.

The MDF adopted a 14-point common minimum programme, which includes upholding of secularism and protecting the territorial integrity of Manipur, commitment to make efforts for restoration of peace through discussions with all insurgent groups, rooting out corruption and revival of the economy.

The party-wise break-up: MRCP: 10; BJP: 6; NCP: 2; Progressive Federal Party of Manipur: 2; JD-S: 1; MPP: 1 and Samata Party: 1.
