Residents protest killing of 'Red Fort' militant

A day after police claimed to have achieved a major breakthrough in the sensational Red Fort shoot-out case by killing a militant in south Delhi, some residents of the locality Wednesday staged a demonstration disputing the police version.

Dozens of people of the Jamia Nagar locality took to the streets and raised anti-police slogans claiming that the person killed was a resident of Moradabad and not a militant from Pakistan.

The Delhi police, assisted by other central agencies had raided a residential complex in Jamia Nagar, and shot dead a person who they claimed was a Lashkar-e-Tayiba militant responsible for the Red Fort shoot-out.

The mob dispersed on intervention of some senior residents.

Anticipating more trouble, police presence has further been beefed-up in the area.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police Special Cell Ashok Chand disputed all media reports doubting the police version and said, "On the basis of the revelations made by Ashraf Ahmed, another militant who was arrested, we tipped off the Kashmir police which shot down another Lashkar militant in Srinagar Wednesday."

About the demonstration, DCP (South) P Kamraj told PTI that, "There was no protest but some people raised slogans at the behest of vested interests about the incident."

He said, "After all we recovered an assault rifle and some grenades from the site of encounter."
