Suicide bomber targets Badamibagh cantonment, 3 killed

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

A suicide bomber on Monday unsuccessfully tried to drive his explosive-laden car into the army's Badamibagh cantonment in Srinagar, but killed himself and two civilians and injured seven army personnel when the car blew up near the entrance.

The cantonment houses the headquarters of the 15 Corps.

The bomber was driving a Maruti vehicle bearing the number plate DL-5C 5889. The explosion set a nearby shopping complex ablaze. Fire tenders rushed to the spot to put out the fire. Security forces cordoned off the area.

This is the second suicide attack on the cantonment in this year. In April, a suicide bomber had tried to destroy the headquarters of the 15 Corps by driving an explosive laden vehicle into the cantonment, which eventually blew up outside the entrance.
