Manipur Governor air-dashing to New Delhi

In the backdrop of indications by the Centre that President's rule might be imposed in Manipur, Governor Ved Marwah is air-dashing to New Delhi on Wednesday evening after being summoned, official sources said in Imphal.

The governor was to leave early on Wednesday morning after receiving the summons from New Delhi on Tuesday evening, but could not do so because the flight to Calcutta was delayed by over three hours, the sources said.

Marwah would submit a report on the latest political and law and order situation in the state to the Union home ministry, the sources said.

Union Home Minister L K Advani had hinted on imposition of President's rule in the state on Saturday because of the on-going political crisis caused by the stand off between Chief Minister W Nipamacha Singh and Speaker S Dhananjoy Singh.

The latter had accused the ruling United Legislature Front government of 'failure' on all fronts.

The Speaker is being backed by opposition Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, Manipur Peoples Party, Samata Party, Janata Party, Janata Dal (United) and the Nationalist Congress Party, who have urged central intervention.

Nipamacha Singh and Forest Minister Gangmumei Kamei, in a joint letter to the Speaker on December 15 had urged him to fix the date for discussion of the no-confidence motion against the ULF government as per constitutional provisions.

The Speaker, after admitting the motion on December one, the first day of the winter session, had adjourned the House sine die and later announced he would convene the house within 45 days.
