Al Gore hints the fight is over

T V Parasuram in Washington

Republican Governor George W Bush was Wednesday poised to become the United States president after the country's apex court dealt a crushing blow to his rival Democrat Al Gore overturning a decision on vote recount in Florida.

The US Supreme Court, through a split verdict, ruled that the hand recount of votes ordered by the Florida Supreme Court last week violated an amendment to the US Constitution guaranteeing equal protection to every voter.

Indicating that the fight is over, Gore asked Democrats running the efforts for recount of votes in Florida to suspend their work and one of his top aides said the vice-president was expected to make a statement later in the day.

Bush so far has not claimed victory but is now assured of the 25 votes from Florida when the 537-member Electoral College meets here to choose the 43rd US president. He will have a majority of one.
