TN police moves HC against Jaya's acquittal in Tansi case

The crime branch-CID of the Tamil Nadu police Monday filed appeals in Madras high court challenging a special judge's order acquitting former chief minister Jayalalitha in the Tansi land deal case.

The crime branch has also challenged the acquittal of Jaya's close aide Sasikala Natarajan and former Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation (TANSI) chairman T R Srinivasan.

Special Judge P Anbazhagan's in his October 9 order had acquitted Jayalalitha holding that the prosecution had cited no law to establish that a public servant was barred from acquiring government properties.

The crux of the prosecution case was that Jayalalitha, when she was the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, had cleared the sale of some prime properties owned by TANSI and than had participated in the bidding process through 'Jaya Publications' and 'Sasi Enterprises' -- firms in which she and Sasikala were partners.

The transaction, which allegedly involved undervaluation of the properties and consequent evasion of stamp duty, had resulted in a loss of millions of rupees to the exchequer.

The crime branch contends that as per the code of conduct for ministers, Jayalalitha as chief minister was not entitled to purchase government properties.
