E-Mail this report to a friend

A priest attached to the Church of North India in Gujarat's Surendranagar district was allegedly beaten up and paraded naked by some unidentified people at a religious fair on Tuesday, police said on Friday.

In a complaint lodged on Thursday, Arthur Chimanlal Rajwadi, alleged that he was beaten up and paraded naked by some unidentified people after he and two other priests distributed religious pamphlets at the fair.

Rajwadi (29) was approached by a group of 15 to 20 people who allegedly threatened him and then forcibly removed his clothes, police said.

The group beat up Rajwadi and paraded him naked on the main road, police said.

The police have registered a case under sections 323, 504, 506(2) and 114 of the Indian Penal Code.

The All-India Christian Council, in a faxed memorandum to the President, has condemned the incident and demanded strong action against the culprits.
