J&K govt to explain 'autonomy' demand

The Jammu and Kashmir government has constituted an 'autonomy cell' to project the 'correct picture' of the autonomy issue.

Headed by S Teja Singh, former member-convenor of the erstwhile State Autonomy Council, it will analyse media comments and interact with intellectuals and eminent personalities in the country on the issue.

The cell has been given the responsibility of creating a conducive atmosphere for a 'proper, balanced and comprehensive understanding' of the subject. It will prepare and publicise fact sheets and pamphlets explaining that the demand for restoration of autonomy is strictly within the confines and provisions of the Constitution.

The step has been taken to dispel misinformation, doubts and misunderstanding among sections of the public, press and intelligentsia about the content and implications of the report of the J&K state autonomy committee. The report has been approved by the state government and endorsed by the state legislature.

According to a government order, it has also been felt necessary to project the 'correct picture' before the people - reflecting the purpose of autonomy as promoting better understanding and harmonious relationship between the state and the Union without affecting the unity and integrity of the country.
