IT serves fresh notice on Laloo: PTI

The income tax department has served a fresh notice to Rashtriya Janata Dal president Laloo Prasad Yadav to pay Rs 10 million in taxes, including interest, for 1990-96 and asked him to clear his dues within 30 days.

IT sources said in Patna on Monday that the fresh tax demand on Yadav included interest after fresh evaluation of some assets and detection of investments in Kisan Vikas Patras. The notice was served on Yadav recently.

The department had not raised any tax demand on Chief Minister Rabri Devi for 1990-96 and had allowed her to operate her salary account earlier frozen by the IT.

The department had also allowed Yadav to operate his salary account.

The latest tax demand on Yadav follows the order of commissioner of income tax (appeal 2), Patna, Jugnu Sahay in June, directing the assessment wing of the department to make a fresh assessment of his income for the period.

Yadav had moved the IT appellate when the department made a tax demand, with interest, in 1998.

The sources said Yadav had moved the income tax tribunal challenging the latest assessment by the department.

Yadav and Rabri Devi are facing trial in the court of the designated Central Bureau of Investigation judge in connection with a disproportionate assets case against the RJD president. The case charges Yadav with having accumulated wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income between 1990 and 1996, when he was chief minister.
