Hizb men attack Lashkar camp, kill 1

E-Mail this report to a friend

Police claimed on Wednesday that Hizbul Mujahideen militants attacked a hideout of foreign mercenaries dominated by the Lashkar-e-Tayiba, killing one terrorist and wounding another in Niki Mori Dhok village in Surankot, Jammu, on Monday night, indicating a rift among militant groups in Jammu and Kashmir.

Hizb militants for the first time joined people of the village in attacking the hideout after Haji Lal Hussain of Mehrot village was severely beaten up by Lashkar men on Monday, police sources in Jammu said.

The fierce fighting that took place on the intervening night of August 14/15 resulted in the killing of one Lashkar militant and serious injury to another, the sources said, adding the Lashkar militants later fled the hideout along with their injured colleague.

The clash was the outcome of continued harassment and atrocities on the villagers and the killing of a religious leader, Haji Mumtaz, last month by the Lashkar, they said.

Police and security forces reached the village on Tuesday after getting a report about the clash and have launched search operations to apprehend militants belonging to both groups, the sources said.
