Suicide bomber killed in Srinagar blast

E-Mail this report to a friend Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

A suicide bomber tried to break through a security cordon in a Maruti apparently loaded with explosives to destroy the headquarters of the army's 15 Corps in the high security Badami Bagh cantonment area. The guards posted at the main gate tried to stop the vehicle when the vehicle blew up. The bomber was also killed in the blast.

A senior police officer said seven people, including four army soldiers, were injured in the first suicide bomber attack in Kashmir were rushed to hospital. This is the second attack on the heavily-guarded Badami Bagh cantonment though. On November 3, three heavily-armed Fidayeen (suicide squad) militants sneaked inside the corps headquarters, killing the army PRO Major Purshottam and six others. Security was beefed up after the attack.

The blast today shook the area and the vehicle was blown apart, say locals. The vehicle was blow to pieces. Sources said that the suicide bomber was also killed in the massive explosion. No group has yet admitted responsibility for the blast.

Police sources said security was being further beefed up. Immediately after the blast army soldiers circled the area. Traffic was diverted and searches conducted. Locals had a difficulty in reaching their homes. Senior army, paramilitary and police officers visited the spot.
