Sunni meet condemns 'jihad' in Kashmir

E-Mail this report to a friend

An all-world Sunni conference, held in Multan (Pakistani Punjab) has condemned amassing of arms in the name of 'jihad' in Kashmir and Afghanistan.

According to Urdu daily Jang, the conference, held early this month, passed a number of resolutions, one of which said ''carrying on terrorism in the name of Islam has brought a bad name to this faith''.

''Mosques and 'imambaras' (Shias' place of worship) were being attacked and arms amassed in the name of 'jihad' in Kashmir and Afghanistan. These activities were bringing a bad name to Islam. The government must take a serious note of it,'' the resolution said.

Addressing the last session of the conference, Sunni leader Sahebzada Syed Hamid Gilani said the Muslim youth was being misled in the name of 'jihad'. ''Islam is being defamed with the use of gun,'' he said. Sunnis, as a whole, have not shown any interest in the training of Sunni youth, he said.

In a separate news-item the paper has reported that all through the three days the conference was going on, the Indian high commission's military attache Brig Rakesh Das was touring Multan. The insinuation, if any, was not made clear.

The conference chose Multan in southern Punjab for its international conference probably because it is from here that rabid anti-Shia Sunni movements have sprung up in the past 15 years.
