Judge named to probe Anantnag firing

The Jammu and Kashmir government has instituted a one-man high-level judicial commission to inquire into the killing of seven civilians by security forces in Anantnag district this week.

Law Minister Pyare Lal Handoo informed the legislative assembly today that retired Supreme Court judge S R Pandyan will head the inquiry commission.

Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah had on Tuesday claimed that the Special Operations Group and CRPF used excess force when they fired on a peaceful procession at Barakpora in Anantnag district, leaving seven persons dead and several others injured. One of them succumbed to his injuries yesterday.

The chief minister had announced that the entire episode would be probed by a high-level judicial commission.

The district police and administrative authorities also have been shifted.

Both the houses of the state legislature had been adjourned on Tuesday for today to show sympathy with the grieved families.

Meanwhile, several members today demanded adequate compensation to the families of the victims and government jobs to the next of kin of those who were killed in the firing.
