US 'does not' apprehend coup in Pak

The US ambassador to Pakistan, William B Milam has denied that the US administration was apprehending a coup in Pakistan.

In an interview with the Daily News and the Daily Jang, the US ambassador discarded the possibility of a coup in Pakistan saying ''though the US is not opposed to a political change in Pakistan through constitutional means, we had no indication that there was any kind of extra-constitutional intention on the part of anybody and in this connection we never referred to the army.''

Replying to another question, he said, ''Relations between Pakistan and the United States are neither any closer nor are they further apart.''

As for the visit of President Bill Clinton to south Asia, he saw bright prospects. ''There are no pre-requisites. The only issue is the security and if the security situation becomes worse then the visit might be constrained... President Clinton will like to see the Lahore process revived and he will be pleased to help. But we don't see ourselves in the role of any kind of a mediator,'' he said.
