Bill Richardson to discuss Ganga pollution

E-Mail this report to a friend

United States Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson will visit the holy city of Varanasi next week and discuss the problem of pollution in the Ganga with environmental activists and the Ganga Action Plan officials.

According to noted environmental activist Professor Veer Bhadra Misra, Richardson will visit Varanasi probably on October 27 and take part in a function organised by the Sankat Mochan Foundation, a non-governmental organisation engaged in the Ganga cleaning campaign.

Richardson's visit was officially announced by Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Karl F Inderfurth recently in Washington. However, the detailed programme of his engagements in Varanasi is still awaited.

Professor Misra said that the officials of the US Agency for International Development were in touch with the SMF activists regarding Richardson's visit and efforts were being made to workout meaningful collaboration between India and the US to make the Ganga pollution free.

Professor Misra, a recipient of the ''Global 500-Roll of Honour,'' has been mentioned as one of the seven Heroes of the Planet by Time magazine for his outstanding role in environmental protection.

Scientists and environmental activists of the US are taking keen interest in the anti-pollution campaign for the Ganga under the banner Friends of Ganges.
