Extremists massacre 17 in Tripura

E-Mail this report to a friend

At least 17 persons were mowed down by guerrillas of the banned All-Tripura Tiger Force at Panchabati village in West Tripura tonight.

Police sources in Agartala said heavily armed tribal guerrillas stormed the village dominated by non-tribals and sprayed bullets indiscriminately, killing 10 persons on the spot and injuring several others, seven of whom died on the way to hospital.

The other injured persons were moved to hospital in a critical condition.

The incident was the worst massacre in Tripura's history.

Top police and army officials with additional paramilitary forces have rushed to the spot and launched a search for the attackers.

Tension prevailed in the entire West Tripura district and surrounding areas following the massacre.

Additional forces were deployed in tribal-dominated villages to pre-empt any retaliation.
